What Are Pressed Concrete Paving Slabs?

Pressed concrete paving slabs are manufactured by compressing a concrete mix under high pressure to create a dense, strong and consistent paving slab. This process results in a slab that is highly durable, resistant to weathering and capable of withstanding heavy footfall and everyday use. Pressed concrete slabs are one of the most widely used paving materials in the UK, offering a reliable and affordable solution for patios, pathways, driveways and commercial areas.

Sizes Available

Our pressed concrete paving slabs are available in a range of sizes to suit different projects and laying patterns:

450mm x 450mm — A popular square format, ideal for pathways, smaller patio areas and stepping stone layouts.

600mm x 600mm — Our most popular size, suitable for larger patio areas and a clean, uniform finish. Available in grey, buff and charcoal.

600mm x 300mm — A rectangular format that works well in stretcher bond or basketweave patterns, offering a more contemporary look.

900mm x 600mm — A larger format slab ideal for covering bigger areas quickly and creating a bold, spacious feel underfoot.

If you're unsure which size is best suited to your project, our team are happy to advise. Give us a call on 02476 644601 or email help@oakdalefencing.co.uk.

Colours Available

Our pressed concrete paving slabs are available in three classic colours:

Grey — A clean, neutral tone that works well in both domestic and commercial settings. Grey concrete paving slabs are a timeless choice that complements a wide range of garden styles, boundary walls and fencing.

Buff — A warm, sandstone-style tone that softens the appearance of a paved area and blends naturally with brick work, timber and planting.

Charcoal — A darker, more contemporary shade that creates a striking contrast against lighter garden features and is particularly popular for modern outdoor spaces.

Why Choose Pressed Concrete Paving Slabs?

Pressed concrete paving slabs remain one of the most popular paving choices in the UK for good reason. Here's why so many homeowners and contractors choose concrete slabs for their paving projects:

Affordability: Pressed concrete paving slabs offer excellent value for money and are one of the most cost-effective paving options available. They are an ideal choice for covering large areas without exceeding your budget.

Durability: The high-pressure manufacturing process produces a dense, hard-wearing slab that is built to last. Concrete paving slabs can withstand heavy footfall, garden furniture and general outdoor use year after year.

Ease of Installation: Pressed concrete slabs are straightforward to lay, making them a popular choice for both experienced tradespeople and confident DIYers. Their consistent dimensions make planning and cutting much more predictable than natural stone alternatives.

Low Maintenance: Once laid correctly, concrete paving slabs require very little ongoing maintenance. An occasional brush down and periodic jet wash is all that is needed to keep them looking clean and presentable.

Versatility: Available in multiple sizes and colours, pressed concrete slabs can be laid in a variety of patterns including stretcher bond, basketweave and random layouts to achieve different effects.

Things to Consider When Ordering Pressed Concrete Paving Slabs

Calculate Your Area: Before placing your order, measure the length and width of the area you wish to pave and calculate the total square meterage. We recommend ordering around 10% extra to account for cuts, waste and any future repairs.

Slab Thickness: The appropriate slab thickness will depend on the intended use. Our 32mm and 35mm slabs are well suited to pedestrian areas such as patios and pathways. For areas that may need to support heavier loads, our 50mm slabs are the better choice.

Sub-Base Preparation: A well-prepared sub-base is essential for a long-lasting result. Concrete paving slabs should always be laid on a compacted hardcore sub-base topped with a mortar bed to ensure stability and prevent movement over time. See our full paving guide for step-by-step installation advice.

Jointing: Always leave consistent joint gaps between slabs and fill with a suitable jointing compound once the mortar has fully cured. Properly jointed slabs are more stable and will resist weed growth more effectively.
